Sleep Debt — Support

Sleep Debt reads the sleep records in Apple Health, from your Apple Watch, another tracker or nights you enter yourself, and shows how much sleep debt you have built up, how regular your sleep is, and when to go to bed tonight.

Frequently asked questions

I don’t see any sleep data. What should I check?

With an Apple Watch, wear it to sleep with sleep tracking on: in the Health app, open Sleep and set up a sleep schedule. Without one, see the next question. Allow the app to read Sleep: in the Health app, tap your profile picture, then Apps under Privacy, then Sleep Debt. Health doesn’t tell apps whether they may read data, so a missing permission looks the same as missing nights. The first estimate needs three nights.

I don’t have an Apple Watch. Can I still use the app?

Yes. The app reads the sleep records in Apple Health, so it works with any watch, ring or sleep app that saves sleep there (for example Oura, WHOOP, Withings, Sleep Cycle or AutoSleep: turn on their Health sync, then allow Sleep for Sleep Debt in the Health app). Product names belong to their owners; the app isn’t affiliated with them. If you have none, enter your nights yourself: in the app, Settings → Data → Add sleep manually, or the card on Today. Each night is saved in Apple Health and counted like watch data; three nights give the first estimate, and you can go back four weeks. The iPhone’s own bedtime tracking records time in bed, not sleep, so the app doesn’t count it. Sleep stages are shown for Apple Watch only.

How is my sleep debt calculated?

Each night’s sleep is compared with your sleep need. The last 14 nights count, and recent nights count more. Nights without data are left out, and the debt never goes below zero. The Learn tab explains the method and links to its scientific sources.

How do I set my sleep need and my alarm?

In the app’s Settings. The recommended range for your age group is shown there, but your own need may fall outside it. The plan counts back from your workday alarm, which you set during setup and can change any time. You can also choose the pace: steady moves your bedtime 15 minutes earlier each night, fast up to an hour.

The morning report didn’t arrive.

Turn it on in the app’s Settings → Notifications, and allow notifications in iOS Settings → Notifications → Sleep Debt. It arrives once your watch or sleep app has saved the night to Health and your iPhone has received it, at most once a night. Nights you enter by hand don’t send one. It isn’t sent while the app is open, because you see the same numbers there. If your iPhone stays locked, it may arrive after you unlock it.

My Apple Watch shows no data or older numbers.

Open the iPhone app once: it sends your recent nights and settings to the watch. On the watch, open Sleep Debt and allow it to read your sleep data as well.

How do I add a widget or a complication?

Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and choose Sleep Debt. For the Lock Screen, touch and hold it, tap Customize and add the widget. On Apple Watch, edit your watch face and choose a Sleep Debt complication. They update when a new night arrives.

What does Sleep Debt Plus include?

Plus shows your sleep debt and how it changes, tonight’s plan (bedtime, wake-up time and last caffeine), the morning report, the bedtime and last-caffeine reminders, the widgets, and the sleep debt pages and complications on Apple Watch. Without Plus you still see last night, your 14-night chart, your sleep rhythm, the notes and all the articles.

How do I cancel or manage my subscription?

On your iPhone, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Sleep Debt Plus, or in the app, Settings → Sleep Debt Plus → Manage subscription. The subscription renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. If you cancel during the free trial, you aren’t charged. Deleting the app doesn’t cancel the subscription.

I subscribed, but Plus isn’t unlocked.

Make sure you’re signed in with the Apple Account you used to subscribe. In the app, open Settings → Sleep Debt Plus and tap Restore purchases. For Apple Watch, open the iPhone app once so it passes Plus to the watch.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Is the app a medical device?

No. It doesn’t diagnose or treat. If you feel very sleepy even after enough sleep, snore loudly, stop breathing during sleep, or can’t sleep even when you have the chance, talk to a doctor.
